Can I send in suggested test questions?
Absolutely, and we thank you for it in advance! All questions submitted by our members will go through the same review process before being implemented into the actual test. Send your test questions to supp...@autotechnician.org.
Do the test questions ever change?
Yes. The questions are queried and chosen randomly from a database of test questions. The question and answer order also changes every time a test is taken per user. New questions are added and rotated into the test question cue regularly.
How and when is the test graded?
The test is graded automatically by the testing software immediately after finishing the test. The test results are then emailed immediately to the test taker using the email address provided.
I don't have an email address. What do I do?
An email address is required in order to receive notifications and confirmations. You can get free email addresses with Google Gmail, Yahoo! other email providers. Open Google in your browser by going to www.google.com and do a search for "Gmail" to get a gmail account.
Is there a time limit for testing? If so, why?
Yes. Currently, the testing time limit is 2 hours. The test will end automatically after this time period and any unanswered questions will be marked wrong. The reason for the time limit is to prevent test takers from doing extensive research while being tested. If you know the answers, you will pass the test and answer them within the time allowance given. The time allowance was chosen based on the average time it took our beta testers to finish the test.
I'm an experienced mechanic. What makes you think this test will prove who I am and why should I take it?
We know testing is not perfect. In the real world of auto repair, proof is in the performance. This is why testing scores are not posted with your profile. You can pass but may not be as good with your hands. The test is just a pre-qualification system only. However the testing was designed carefully to filter out those who should not be registered in order to preserve the integrity of the Membership Directory. Our goal is to avoid inexperienced do-it-yourselfer's and entry level mechanics who do not know the basic fundamentals and techniques a professional mechanic would know. You should be asking every customer you can to log in and give you feedback. This is where proof of performance comes from with website visitors.
What if I fail the first time? Can I re-take the test again?
Yes. You will have three chances to takes the test to pass. If you have three failures, you will be locked out of testing.
What type of computer or browser should I use to take the test?
The testing system supports Internet Explorer version 7 and up, Firefox version 3 and up and Safari (Mac users). Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers are suggested.
What type of test questions are on the test?
The test questions are either multiple choice answers and true/false answers.
Who wrote the test questions?
The test questions were written and reviewed by John Kelly, AutoTechncian.org's honorary contributors, and other appointed industry professionals who also served as beta testers. The combined experience of the question authors in our panel alone totals over 200+ years of field service. All test questions were scrutinized for relevance, universal vehicle and equipment knowledge and for requiring reading and comprehension of the test subject matter. We also get test questions from our professional members and scrutinize those questions the very same way before using them.
Why can't more than one mechanic register their profile on the same computer?
In order to encourage individual testing and registration as opposed to groups taking the test and registering at once, we purposely require one mechanic per computer in one location. For example: A dealership shop has 5 mechanics. Each takes the test and passes. Only one can register their profile into the directory at that building's computer terminal IP address unless the building has several IP addresses and computers. The remaining 4 mechanics will need to register on another computer (like at home or a public library) with a different IP address within 72 hours of passing the test.
Why is a mechanic's reading and comprehension ability a requirement?
Mechanics have to be able to read and interpret technical bulletins, specifications, installation instructions and follow schematics.

Can I register my directory profile without testing?
This depends on the reason why testing should be bypassed. If a valid reason is provided to us and you can provide copies of credentials such as licenses, certifications and at least 5 customer signed references, you may be considered.
Can shop owners or managers register their profiles?
Yes, and we encourage them to do so. As long as they meet all of the membership requirements, they are welcome to register their profile too.
How long does my profile listing stay active?
Every mechanic has 180 days of live registration. You will receive notice within 10 days of expiration and will be able to renew your registration again for free.
I'm a mechanic. What do I need to do to register for free?
1. Take the pre-qualification test and pass with an 80% or better.
2. Within 72 hours, register and list your profile into the Membership Directory.
Why does my profile listing expire in 180 days?
We want to be sure your profile stays current with your current working situation, place of employment and experience level. We understand that changes happen and want to remind members to keep their profiles as up-to-date as possible.
